The one-of-a-kind Bugatti W16 Mistral ‘La Perle Rare’ transforms the roadster into a rolling work of art defined by craftsmanship, individuality, and timeless elegance.
An open-top masterpiece that marks the closing chapter of the legendary W16 era, the Bugatti W16 Mistral already stands among the most significant creations in the marque’s modern history. Yet through Bugatti’s bespoke Sur Mesure personalisation programme, the hypercar evolves beyond performance into something more intimate. The one-off W16 Mistral ‘La Perle Rare’ embodies that philosophy, transforming the roadster into an exquisite piece of automotive art.
The project first began in August 2023 at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, where Jascha Straub, Bugatti’s Manager of Sur Mesure and Individualization, met the client who would bring the vision to life. From the earliest conversations, the ambition was clear: to enhance the inherent beauty of the W16 Mistral through a sculptural, flowing aesthetic – one that would echo some of the most refined interpretations in Bugatti’s recent history.

As the collaboration developed, Bugatti’s design team immersed themselves in the client’s vision, refining every detail through an iterative creative process. The result is a harmonious dialogue between Bugatti’s design expertise and the owner’s personal taste.
At the heart of the concept lies Bugatti’s signature hand-painted “Vagues de Lumière” motif, inspired by the way light dances across the surfaces of the brand’s hyper sports cars. Straub envisioned a pearlescent tribute to the elemental beauty of the W16 Mistral – a design language that ultimately gave rise to the name ‘La Perle Rare’.

The exterior is defined by a striking two-tone composition that visually separates the upper and lower body, evoking the balance between sky and earth. Achieving the final palette required extensive experimentation by Bugatti’s colour specialists. What began as a silver concept evolved into a nuanced blend of white tones – one warmer and infused with golden undertones, the other a refined warm white – both enriched with metallic flakes to enhance depth and luminosity. The lengthy development process resulted in two entirely bespoke colours created exclusively for this vehicle.

Central to the car’s identity are the delicate white-and-gold dividing lines that sweep across its bodywork. Executed by the Bugatti Design Studio in Berlin, the process demanded meticulous hand-taping, masking and weeks of supervised painting, with hundreds of hours devoted to achieving absolute precision. The result is a flowing visual signature that captures light from every angle, further complemented by diamond-cut alloy wheels finished in a custom paint blend mirroring the exterior’s golden and pearlescent tones.

Inside, the pursuit of elegance continues. The cabin reflects the same jewel-like aesthetic, with carbon components painted entirely in white to create an atmosphere of purity and light. Door panels feature alternating white and warm gold linework that follows the sculpted contours of the interior, while subtle ambient lighting reinforces the luminous, pearl-inspired theme. Machined and polished aluminium accents – from steering wheel details to centre-console dials – add a layer of reflective brilliance, echoing the exterior’s visual rhythm.
Personal touches further elevate the commission. Straub’s handwritten ‘La Perle Rare’ signature appears throughout the car, from stitched detailing along the central tunnel to engravings on the bespoke white-and-gold engine cover, as well as a painted signature beneath the rear wing – transforming the hypercar into a true artist’s statement.

A final nod to Bugatti’s heritage comes in the form of Rembrandt Bugatti’s iconic Dancing Elephant motif, integrated into both the cockpit and exterior bodywork behind the front wheels. The detail bridges past and present, linking more than a century of design legacy with contemporary individualisation.
With the W16 era drawing to a close, the W16 Mistral ‘La Perle Rare’ stands as an extraordinary expression of what Bugatti’s Sur Mesure philosophy represents – a seamless fusion of performance, artistry and personal vision, shaped into an automotive creation as rare and luminous as its name suggests.
